Bill Davis was an avid engineer from St. Louis, a lover of Harley Davidson motorcycles. Inspired by the bikes of yesteryear known as hardtails, Davis invented a chassis similar to those of these bikes but with suspension, since the hardtails did not have it: it was a rigid chassis. Thus was born the well-known Softail chassis, now a Harley Davidson patent. The first Softail chassis was made between 1974 and 1975. It was a round tube structure, with a swingarm that pivoted in the cantilever at the bottom but started from the top, placing the shock absorber under the bike so that it did not look and optically hardtail. Using his own motorcycle as a prototype to build the first Softail, a 1972 Super Glide, Davis patented it and immediately contacted Willie G. Davidson; they met in August 1976. Davidson was interested in the invention, but it was not clear to him to incorporate the chassis into the assembly lines. Bill Davis continued to develop the Softail chassis, changing the pivot and spring points so that the shock was under the chassis, with the pivot point now located at the top of the triangle swingarm. This allowed the classic oil tank used by Harley Davidsons to be placed under the seat. Davis tried to produce the new chassis independently, but did not get enough support. But luck came from the hand of a senior Harley Davidson official, Jeffrey Bleustein, who came to see him in January 1982 to buy everything: design, patents, tools and prototypes. After the corresponding tests and development, the first series Softail was released in June 1983, in the 1984 Harley Davidson Softail FXST model. This in summary form, is the history of the prized Harley Davidson Softails. Heritage Softail Classic since 1988view galleryHarley Davidson Heritage Softail Classic The first Heritage Softail Classic appeared in 1988, simply based on suggestions from a certain era. Harley Davidson has kept that concept alive until this 2016 Heritage Softail Classic, retaining all the quirks of the past, but with the technology of the present. Softails have always piqued my curiosity. Its chassis aesthetically is something different. It seems rigid but it is not, an interesting effect that has a large number of followers within the brand. The Softail family has always made a difference and not just because of the chassis. There have been a few different models that have equipped this chassis, since that first Softail FXST in 1984. The best known, without a doubt, the Heritage Classic and the cool Fat Boy. But in the 2016 catalog we find some more; Slim, Deluxe, Breakout, Fat Boy, Fat Boy Special and Heritage Classic. In addition to the S series, with the Slim S and Fat Boy S. The Heritage Softail Classic is perhaps the most serious of the family, albeit a bit flirty. With a slightly feminine style, this Softail represents the past of American motorcycles, with a very genuine air, which could well have its origins in the Far West.
